Federal officials from the FDA and CDC silently released information that at least four states had patients with confirmed E. coli after eating at the popular chain, Subway. The agencies didn’t release specifics on the patients.

E. coli SubwayE. Coli is bacteria that normally live in the intestines of healthy people and animals. While most strains are harmless, the one found in recent patients, 0157: H7, is a specific strain that can cause serious illness. Symptoms of E.Coli typically begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption. These symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days. However, those most at risk include the very young, the very old, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

E. coli Subway Outbreak

Neither the FDA nor CDC confirmed an E. coli Subway outbreak, however, 11 people diagnosed with E. coli O157: H7 all ate at a Subway location before getting sick. Even though the federal agencies didn’t name the fast-food locations as the cause, immediately after identifying the potential locations, the infections stopped. The four states involved at Nevada, Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. Experts believe that tainted romaine could be responsible.
