The FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb announced on Twitter that the agency traced the romaine recall to the West Coast. The CDC still warns to not eat any romaine lettuce since it still hasn’t discovered the source of the contamination.

About E.Coli

RomaineE.Coli is bacteria that normally live in the intestines of healthy people and animals. While most strains are harmless, the one found in recent patients is a specific strain that causes serious illness. Symptoms of E.Coli typically begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption. These symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days. However, those most at risk include the very young, the very old and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Foodborne illness hits one in six Americans every year, the CDC says, estimating that 48 million people get sick due to one or another of 31 pathogens. About 128,000 people end up in the hospital and 3,000 die annually. In all 50 states, the CDC has the capacity to do genomic testing on samples from infected patients (such as blood samples). It also can genetically link the identified pathogens in human illness to actual food sources.

This Romaine Recall

Thus far, the CDC has received reports of 32 people who became ill during this current romaine recall. Also, 13 people needed hospitalization. One of the hospitalized people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a potentially life-threatening form of kidney failure. No deaths have been reported. The outbreak streak has spread to 11 states. People have become sick in California, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Also, the Public Health Agency of Canada has identified an additional 18 people who have become sick with the same strain of E. coli in Ontario and Quebec.
However, the FDA has not pinpointed the source. Most of the romaine lettuce being harvested right now is coming from the California region, although there’s some lettuce coming in from Mexico. Since the agency hasn’t identified one specific distributor or source, the FDA is warning consumers to avoid all types and brands of romaine lettuce.
Illnesses in the current outbreak started in October, and it is not related to another multistate outbreak linked to romaine lettuce this summer.

Stomach PainE. Coli is bacteria that can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in humans. The CDC estimates the bacteria causes 2,000 hospitalizations each year. Plus, 10% go on to develop more serious complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS can cause kidney failure, damage to the central nervous system, and ultimately death.
