A Utah-based pet food manufacturer has issued a nationwide cat food recall. The two-pound, frozen bags of “Quest Beef Cat Food” tested positive for Salmonella. Even though it is pet food, salmonella can be a danger to pets and humans alike. Cats can contract the bacteria along with humans who handle it.

The bacteria usually live in animal and human intestines and shed through feces. Consuming contaminated water or food spreads the infection to humans. Symptoms last two to seven days. Diarrhea may last up to 10 days, however, it may take several months before bowels return to normal. However, salmonella can develop into typhoid fever. This is a deadly disease. About 300 people get typhoid fever in the United States each year. About 22 million cases of typhoid fever and 200,000 related deaths occur worldwide each year.

Cat Food Recall

The cat food recall involves “Quest Beef Cat Food” by Go Raw. Go Raw sells the food nationwide. The lot in question is UPC 6-91730-17101-8, Lot N128. It is important to know that salmonella can affect animals eating the products, and there is also a risk to humans handling the contaminated food.
Thus far no one has reported any illness, however, most reports take weeks to arrive. Go Raw wasn’t even aware of the issue. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture randomly tested the cat food and notified the company.
