Last week, a severe and sudden wind gust injured several passengers aboard the Norwegian Escape. Passengers tweeted the harrowing ordeal when the 20-deck ship suddenly tilted just before midnight under the force of an unexpected gale topping 100 knots or about 115 mph.
About Cruise Injuries
Cruise ships bring a number of potential safety hazards inherent to a marine environment. This includes corrosion from salt water, sea spray, and water tracked into high traffic areas from pool areas. Spilled drinks, wet or foreign substances, food in restaurants, loose flooring to water tracked in by guests using the swimming pools, even dim lighting in stairwells and hallways are all common causes of slip and falls.
Cruise Wind Gust Injuries
The cruise wind incident happened when a strong weather front moved across the eastern US seaboard. The front brought multiple tornadoes across the southern part of the country. The Norwegian Escape departed from New York on a 7-day cruise to the Bahamas. The ship had almost 5,000 guests and 2,000 crew members. The ship was supposed to head to the Bahamas after a Port Canaveral port of call.
Passengers described chairs, tables, glass, and people all flying to one side of the ship. Even a lotto machine fell on a woman, and there was blood everywhere. Another cruise patron said the cabin tilted so steeply that they were stuck in the room. Glass and everything kept breaking inside the cabin.
