A loving couple decided to take a 40th-anniversary cruise to Norway onboard the Viking Sky. However, everything went horribly wrong and the male passenger is left with a devasting cruise ship injury. Plus, he finds himself completely bedridden in a hospital.
About Cruise Injuries
Cruise ships bring a number of potential safety hazards inherent to a marine environment. This includes corrosion from salt water, sea spray, and water tracked into high traffic areas from pool areas. Spilled drinks, wet or foreign substances, food in restaurants, loose flooring to water tracked in by guests using the swimming pools, even dim lighting in stairwells and hallways are all common causes of slip and falls.
Cruise Ship Injury Leaves Passenger in Coma
The cruise started off well until the captain onboard Viking Cruises decided to recklessly sail into perilous waters into the path of a Bomb Cyclone. According to CNN meteorologist, bombogenesis occurs when a storm’s barometric pressure drops by 24 millibars (pressure) in 24 hours. The lower the pressure, the more powerful the storm. The pressure could be equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane.
The passengers describe flipping completely over. The husband rolled down several stairs. The fall caused a laceration to his leg, a sprained ankle and rib contusions. Plus, both began to develop flu-like symptoms on the plane ride home. He has been in four different hospitals since April 1 after suffering complications. The passenger describes being unable to walk, talk or just perform simple self-care tasks.
Doctors at a new hospital in Connecticut had to put him in a medically induced coma for three weeks while he remained paralyzed for an additional two weeks. Medical professionals expect him to remain in the hospital for several months. Then, he will need long-term nursing care. All this suffering for simply taking a cruise.
Viking Cruise Liable
The couple blames the male passenger’s condition on Viking Cruise. They describe having to sit on the floor for over 18 hours while being in close quarters with multiple other passengers. Conditions were deplorable. Toilets were overflowing. Plus, passengers ate from open food containers without utensils. The couple fears drowning or worse. Also, there weren’t even life vests in the cabin. This was unusual and it took several hours before crew members gave them one.
Passengers felt as though the crew had no idea what they were doing. Crew members mentioned that the situation was completely different than rehearsed. Everyone seemed clueless, and therefore, people became gravely injured.
