The cruise industry insists that a cruise for a vacation is far safer than flying or staying at a hotel. The industry likes to pretend that a cruise is a far better way to relax. However, hundreds are injured each year. So, just how safe is it?

Sexual Assaults

essure sad womanThe cruise industry pushes the notion that sexual assaults are rare. In fact, they say there is less than a 1% chance. Their data is based on before the government mandated reporting. In fact, in 2008, a cruise expert testified before the Senate that the rate of sexual assault on cruise ships is almost twice the U.S. rate. Cruise lines are now required to report all crimes to the Department of Transportation. The number of reported sexual assaults on cruise ships jumped 550% in the first six months of 2016. Statistics went from only six in 2015 to 39  the next year. Overall, reported crimes on ships jumped from only 12 to to 61. Plus, many cruise ships attempt to sway victims to not report the crime.

Food Poisoning

Gastrointestinal outbreaks spread easily from person to person. The most common is Norovirus. Contaminated food and water spread the virus, but physical contact also spreads the illness. This includes shaking hands, sharing food or eating from the same utensils, and not washing hands after using the bathroom or changing diapers. Unlike sexual assaults, cruise ships don’t have to report illnesses. So, cruise ships say gastrointestinal outbreaks account for 3% of illnesses.
According to the CDC, norovirus causes more than 90% of outbreaks of diarrhea on cruise ships. Last year, the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program received 310 reports on Royal Caribbean ships.

Substandard Medical Care

Modern mega cruise ships now have urgent care centers on board that is staffed with doctors and nurses who can treat passengers suffering from a wide range of illnesses and injuries. These range from sea sickness, broken bones, and in some instances, even life-threatening medical conditions. However, a previous law made passengers unable to hold these medical professionals accountable when they injured patients. The cruise industry has been fighting to keep their immunity for decades, but a few years ago the court reversed it. When injured on a cruise, there isn’t a choice in medical care. Incompetent medical professionals make passengers suffer. When the onboard medical staff fails to adequately and competently treat an individual who is sick or injured, there may be medical negligence
