There are several types of umbilical cord conditions, and each come with their own set of complications. A majority of these injury occur when a medical professional like a doctor or a nurse are not paying attention. However, the baby could have a lifetime of complications.

About Umbilical Cord

Monochrome Photo Of Newly Born Baby 3376793The umbilical cord is a narrow tube that connects the developing baby to the uterus of the mother. This supply line carries the baby’s blood back and forth, delivers oxygen and nutrients to the baby and removes waste. The cord begins to form around the fourth week of pregnancy and consists of three blood vessels. There are harmless natural conditions that resolve themselves. However, medical professionals could cause umbilical cord injuries with their negligence.

Umbilical Cord Injuries

Some of these umbilical cord injuries include prolapse, nuchal cord, knots, and cysts. Umbilical cord prolapse happens when there is pressure on the umbilical cord, and it becomes compressed. This usually happens when the cord enters the birth canal before the baby. Another injury is nuchal loops. This happens when the cord wraps around the baby’s neck or other parts of the body such as a limb. A doctor should detect this on an ultrasound and slip the cord off the baby’s neck during labor and birth.
Another preventable umbilical cord injury are umbilical cord knots. This happens when a knot is formed during delivery. If pulled tight, they cause serious problems like decreased oxygen supply, heart rate abnormalities, miscarriage and stillbirth.
