When a baby isn’t in the proper head-first birthing position, this is a breech delivery. Breech deliveries bring many complications if medical professionals are not well trained. The two main breech birth injuries are brain damage and oxygen deprivation. These severe birth injuries bring life-lasting complications and can even kill the infant.

About Birth Injuries

A birth defect is a health problem that usually is DNA related. Some examples are Down Syndrome, a cleft palate or even a heart murmur. Sometimes birth defects derive from outside factors like taking SSRIs during pregnancy. A birth injury is one suffered by a child during labor or delivery or soon after birth. Birth injuries may range from minor problems such as lacerations or bruising to severe injuries that could prove fatal. Medical staff can make mistakes that harm your child. These mistakes could hurt him or her for their entire life.  These mistakes could happen for a variety of reasons, including inattentiveness, exhaustion, or inexperience. When it comes to harming a newborn, these reasons are not excusable.

One of the scariest and potentially most devastating types of injury associated with some breech delivery complications is brain damage. Brain damage can be permanent and make a long-term negative impact on babies and families. When a baby exits feet first or buttocks first,  it is several times more dangerous than a normal delivery. Pressure is put on parts of the body not designed to handle that pressure, and it is more difficult to prevent injuries, including spinal cord injuries. As the baby moves through the birth canal, it may begin to turn or rotate. This can put undue pressure on the back, neck, or head and cause serious spinal cord damage.
Another concern is oxygen deprivation. If the umbilical cord is compressed or wrapped around the baby’s neck, and immediate medical intervention isn’t performed, the baby can suffer from oxygen deprivation and related injuries. In this type of case, time is of the essence. Doctors and medical teams will need to act fast because every minute counts.
Usually, this is an emergency c-section, however, if a doctor does not perform one most will need an assisted delivery. This means that the doctor may need to use forceps or a vacuum extraction to ease the baby through the birth canal. Although these medical tools are a valuable advantage to doctors during the delivery process, they also may cause injuries to the baby.

Compensation for Breech Birth Injuries

Sad ParentsBirth injuries are often lifelong complications that require consistent medical treatment and rehabilitation. Depending on the severity of the injuries, the financial costs associated with birth injuries can range from several thousand to over a million during the lifespan of a child with birth injuries.
For instance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the lifetime costs associated with a child who has cerebral palsy (CP) is around $1 million. The costs associated with a child who suffers hearing loss after a birth injury typically ranges around $400,00.
Therefore, it is important to remember that if your child’s birth injuries are a result of medical negligence and carelessness, the medical staff, hospital, and/or physician may be liable for damages.
