Uterine Cancer Cases Related to Hair Straighteners and Relaxers

3 min read

Introduction

A study from the National Institutes of Health found that in an association of women, who were using hair straightening products, were twice as likely, or more, to develop uterine cancer than women who did not use the hair straightening products.[1]

The study was inconclusive as to whether it was shown that correlation does not necessarily equal causation. The link to cancer so far has not been directly confirmed but it is being tested daily for new information.

Uterine cancer study

Uterine cancer is a particularly rare form of cancer but increases in risk factors as women age. Particularly, the risk factors of uterine cancer increase after menopause.

This research was conducted by 33,000 women taking part in what was known as the “Sister Study,” [2] which is “a large, ongoing study looking for risk factors for breast cancer and other health conditions.” [3]

There was about an 11-year study conducted on a specified group of women who used hair products, including hair dyes, straighteners, and relaxers. According to the American Cancer Society, “women who had reported frequent use of straighteners (more than 4 times in the previous year) were about 2½ times more likely to develop uterine cancer.” [3]
