Whistleblower Reveals Multi-Million Dollar Embezzlement

Los Alamos is the location of a famous laboratory responsible for constructing the atomic bomb. In 2002, it made headlines again after an investigation into an alleged spy at the facility. Wen Ho Lee Lee was a Taiwanese-American scientist who specialized in hydrodynamics.  A wiretapped conversation between Lee and another lab technician revealed him bragging to be in contact with Chinese weapons scientists. When China manufactured warheads similar to American ones, the FBI blamed Lee as the source of the security breach.

As per government standards, an investigation had to take place at the laboratory. Therefore, the company hired Glen Walp to discover any further corruption at the lab. As a former Pennslyvania State Police commissioner, Walp uncovered embezzlement was rampant. One woman in the Engineering Science Application department received a travel check for $600, but she doctored it to the amount of $1,800. This wasn’t the extent of it. He discovered other people were embezzling $300,000 worth of goods. They hid items ranging from water tanks to ATVs inside bunkers.  However, when he brought these facts to lab officials, they looked the other way.

When Walp submitted his findings that employees stole over $3 million worth of money and goods, the lab tried to silence him any way they could. If the Department of Energy discovered the fraud, the lab could lose their multi-billion dollar contract. Then, Walp was fired to avoid him disclosing any more information to the Department of Energy. Walp has since approved the government with his information, and a case is underway. Walp has already received close to $1 million for wrongful termination.
