Mesothelioma Clinical Trials
Researchers use clinical trials to try and find advancements in patient care. When it comes to mesothelioma treatment, a clinical trial can be a safe and controlled way to test whether a new therapy approach is safe, effective and better than existing therapies. Cancer centers, hospitals, universities or even pharmaceutical companies sometimes sponsor them. Every clinical trial is different and has its own guidelines.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) maintains a database of past and present clinical trials. Your doctor can help decide whether a clinical trial could aid in your care. For a list of trials currently available, please go to Clinicaltrials.gov.
Some of the main factors researchers use when determining eligibility are:
- Age and gender of patient
- Overall health of patient
- Type and stage of mesothelioma
- Patient’s past treatment history
- Underlying medical conditions
Keytruda and CRS-207
Starting in June 2017 and running until 2019, six different cancer centers recruited patients for a phase II clinical trial. This involved two immunotherapy drugs: Keytruda (Pembrolizumab) and CRS-207. Researchers saw good results with both drugs in previous trials. Already FDA approved Keytruda, is a well-known immunotherapy medication for treating several types of cancer. Using Listeria bacteria, CRS-207 helps trigger an immune response to a specific tumor antigen.
In order to be for a patient to qualify for this trial, patients must already have received chemotherapy.
