Viagra & Melanoma Cases Expected to Grow

JAMA published a study that men who used the ED drug, Viagra were 84% more likely to develop melanoma. This is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, but it takes a lengthy time to develop.  This is why experts expect the number of cases to grow in the coming years.

About Viagra

viagra melanomaDoctors prescribe Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction, commonly called ED, since 1998. In 2011, manufacturer Pfizer said that medical professional prescribed the drug to more than 35 million men worldwide.
Despite achieving wide popularity, Viagra brings a deadly side effect. A study published in the JAMA Internal Medicine reports that men who take Viagra may double their risk of developing skin cancer, specifically melanoma. Melanoma is the deadliest type of skin cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, it can take 10 to 15 years for cancer to become noticeable.
Because of this, many men using Viagra are exposing themselves to melanoma without even realizing it. It could take decades for it to develop.

Viagra & Melanoma

Like other ED drugs, Viagra works to inhibit the secretion of an enzyme known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (“PDE5”). PDE5 is responsible for allowing increased blood flow to the genitalia and thus helping to maintain an erection.
However, this process can also lead to cell mutation within the body. This can lead to skin cancer developing.

Current Viagra Melanoma Litigation

Over the past 12 months, Judge Seeborg has held regular hearings to obtain reports on the progress of the litigation. Presently, he is hearing depositions for the discovery of information pertaining to the litigation. Those close to the case estimate that it will likely take another 6 to 12 months to complete the production of documents from the drug companies. Pfizer could produce tens of millions of pages of documents about employees in the United States and internationally.
After Pfizer produces the documents, depositions will need to be taken of employees critical in Viagra’s development along with those involved in marketing, monitoring scientific studies, and the surveillance of adverse reports of the drug.
