This is Michael Brady Lynch, lead trial attorney for The Michael Brady Lynch Firm.
It looks like we will likely soon see a Zoloft MDL.
It appears that Pfizer has had enough of the possibility of lawsuits springing up in various jurisdictions across the country alleging birth defects caused by the drug Zoloft. On January 18, Pfizer asked the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation to create a Zoloft MDL in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. This comes on the heels of a Zoloft birth defect lawsuit filed on October 26, 2011 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
As my regular readers are aware, I have been active in Zoloft litigation for years and a very vocal advocate that the warnings regarding the use of SSRIs like Zoloft during pregnancy are wholly inadequate. The strong link between Zoloft and other SSRIs and birth defects first surfaced in 1996 with a study in the New Engalnd Journal of Medicine. Most recently, a Finnish study published in Obstetric & Gynecology identified SSRIs as a major risk factor for congenital heart, cranial and other abnormalities.
Myself and other leadings attorneys involved in Zoloft litigation will be meeting in Phoenix, AZ next month at the AAJ Winter Convention to discuss this pending development in Zoloft litigation. I will keep my readers advised of all updates in this regard
If you or someone you know was on Zoloft or any SSRI and given birth to a child with a birth defect such as cleft lip and cleft palate, club foot, heart defect and or other birth defect, please contact me directly for a free, no-obligation evaluation of your case.
